I first discovered this bakery at Fausto Ferrari’s Barber shop in Garfield place. Fausto came from Italy in the 50′s and raved that Shaddeau’s focaccia is “just like my momma made”. Personally, if an Italian tells you this, you really should listen. My first visit (I think on my way home from Fausto’s) failed to produce focaccia, but I did buy a baguette. I know Shaddeau has won best baguette many years, and frankly I cannot understand why they haven’t won it every year. They sell a 1/2 pound, 1 pound and 2 pound loaf.
The focaccia is great as well. They produce a black olive and basil that is awesome, and you’ll have to trust others on the blue cheese or swiss, since I really don’t care for either cheese.
If I drop off my son in the morning, I usually choose to drop by either Shadeau or Red Fox for breakfast. I don’t like raisins or cheese in breakfast pastries, so it does not leave many options for me, but the chocolate croissant makes up for in quality what Shadeau fails me in quantity of choice.
So if you get a chance, stop by and get something there. I doubt you will be disappointed. That is, unless you come late in the day. They close at 4pm on weekdays, but many of their best items are gone before then.
